PostDoctoral Position in neutrino Physics

The Successful candidate will join the LPSC Neutrino team which has been participating since 2019 in the DUNE/LBNF project whose main objective is to measure two properties that remain to be discovered: the hierarchy of neutrino masses and the CP violation in the lepton sector. For this, a long baseline experiment will be built to propagate a beam of neutrinos produced at FermiLab through earth and detect them 1300 km away in an underground mine in South Dakota by 2030. The detection of neutrinos will be carried out using four very large (60m x 12m x 12m) liquid argon temporal projection chambers (LarTPC).

Detectors of this size require a very large R&D effort currently underway at CERN on the neutrino platform. France will participate via a TGIR in the construction of these detectors and is focusing on a new technology, the “vertical drift”. A large-scale prototype will be installed at CERN in 2022.

The successfull candidate will play a key role in the simulation and analysis of a liquid argon detector using this new technology. The aim will be to precisely determine the performance of the vertical drift technology on all the scientific objectives of the experiment.

The members of the LPSC Neutrino team involved in the DUNE project, four permanent staff and a doctoral student, participate in several aspects of this R&D such as the realization and operation of a cosmic detector for the CERN prototype, the instrumentation for precise measurements of the liquid argon level and consider other participation in scintillation study or high voltage. The LPSC will contribute to the data taking with the prototype at CERN and to their analysis. The study of neutrino-argon interactions, the reconstruction of traces, the effects of detectors and the sensitivities of the experiment to scientific objectives are activities which have started and will take an increasing part in the near future. The candidate will have a driving role within the team in this analysis and simulation effort in close connection with the working groups of the DUNE collaboration.
